My work experience at GL11
We recently welcomed Austin to GL11 for a week of work experience:
I chose to do my Year 10 work experience with GL11 because I wanted to help the community and understand the hard work that goes into creating a space where people from all walks of life feel welcome and supported. Even though GL11 isn’t the biggest organisation, it still has a massive impact. Being here has opened my eyes to the magic that can happen when incredible people come together to help others.
Throughout the week, I’ve taken part in a wide variety of tasks. On Monday, I helped with the morning walk, where we hiked up to the top of Stinchcombe Hill and back – a 4-mile walk! After that, I helped design posters to thank the volunteers who give up their free time to support the community.
On Tuesday, I assisted with breakfast and lunch service and saw firsthand how much effort the chefs put into making good food for everyone who visits GL11. Later that day, I supported the Explorers group – a group of people with additional needs. I was amazed by the care and dedication that goes into giving them a safe and welcoming space. I absolutely loved helping with the Explorers, and they made me feel really welcome.
On Wednesday, I worked in the food pantry, which provides affordable food to people who need a helping hand. I was surprised to learn that the pantry is different from a food bank – I had assumed they were the same until I saw how each one supports people in different ways.
Overall, I’ve really enjoyed working with the Explorers and in the kitchen. These were my favourite parts of the week because the people in both areas were so kind and welcoming, which helped me feel comfortable even though I’d only been at GL11 for a few days.
