Loneliness is everyone’s battle - let’s talk about it
Lisa Wilson, our Interim CEO, has written this blog to mark Loneliness Awareness Week which runs from 9 - 15 June 2025.
When we think of loneliness, we often picture an elderly person sitting alone in a quiet house. But this stereotype hides a more complex and widespread reality: loneliness doesn’t discriminate by age. It can strike during life transitions, identity shifts, or moments when the world feels unfamiliar — and it can happen to us all.
A young mum who’s just moved to a new area. A teenager questioning where they fit in. Someone who’s just retired after 40 years of work. A student starting university. A person recovering from illness. These life changes, often viewed from the outside as “normal” or even exciting, can leave people feeling isolated, lost and invisible.
Loneliness isn’t just a passing emotion, it affects our physical and mental health. Studies have shown it can increase the risk of heart disease, depression, and even dementia. Yet, unlike other public health issues, loneliness is often hidden — tucked away behind polite smiles and quiet evenings.
At GL11 Community Hub, we see every day how powerful community can be to combat loneliness. Belonging is not a luxury — it’s a human need. When people come together over a shared meal, learn a new skill side by side, or even just have a friendly chat in the garden, something shifts. Isolation loosens its grip and life begins to feel a little lighter and more purposeful.
Our mission is to build these everyday moments of connection — to create spaces where people feel seen and valued. Whether it’s through parent-and-toddler groups, creative workshops, volunteer opportunities, or simply having a place to drop in for a cuppa and a chat, GL11 is here to say: you belong here.
Loneliness Awareness Week starts on 9 June. If you’re feeling lonely — reach out. And if you’re in a position to offer kindness, time, or even just a listening ear to someone else — do it. Together, we can create a community where no one feels they have to face life’s changes by themselves.
